The Madrid International Arbitration Center (CIAM), which has the support of public entities, among which the Madrid City Council stands out, and private entities, and the Madrid World Capital Association of Construction, Engineering and Architecture (MWCC) have reached an agreement by which MWCC will jointly promote and support CIAM as the image of Spain in international commercial arbitration. Both institutions will collaborate in promoting international arbitration in the engineering and construction sector and in converting Madrid as the preferred venue for international arbitrations in a sector in which Spanish companies lead the world market.

CIAM has formed a working group of construction and engineering experts to which MWCC has joined. This group, made up of relevant companies from these industries, legal professionals specialized in this economic field and associations linked to the sector, was established in this month of December and will start its activities in January 2021.

Conflicts that revolve around construction and engineering contracts, when the parties do not reach their own agreements, require quick and efficient solutions taken by specialists in the matter. These types of contracts often have an international scope, which is why CIAM is called to be an ideal solution for these disputes through its international mediation and arbitration services. The Professional Associations of Engineers and Architects, partners of MWCC, coincide with the role that CIAM should play as a unifier of international arbitrations specialized in this field.

CIAM is the result of the union of the international arbitration activity of the Spanish Court of Arbitration, the Chamber of Spain, the Court of Arbitration of Madrid, the Chamber of Commerce of Madrid and the Civil and Commercial Court of Arbitration (TOP). They have been joined, as a strategic partner, by the Court of Arbitration of the Madrid Bar Association.

For José Antonio Caínzos, president of CIAM, “one of the essential characteristics of this institution is its ability to unite in this project all the arbitration and mediation actors. The image of Spain and, in particular, that of Madrid, is reinforced with the support of associations representing strongly internationalized economic sectors, in which Spanish companies assume undisputed leadership. CIAM has the necessary resources to provide the best services for conflicts that require a high degree of specialization such as the world of construction and engineering ”.

MWCC, an association that brings together companies and public entities related to the construction, engineering and architecture sector established in March of this year, is a project that arose at the initiative of the Madrid City Council in 2016 to strengthen Spanish leadership abroad and position Madrid as a world reference center. Among its initial objectives was the creation of an International Court of Arbitration that would respond to the demands that had been transferred to it from the sector. CIAM is the institution that embodies the aspirations of the sector and therefore MWCC lends its full support.

For the president of MWCC, David García Núñez, “this agreement represents the mission and vision of MWCC, to take advantage of the synergies between public and private entities for the strategic positioning of the city and its companies in the international arena. We enjoy a national leadership that should be exposed throughout the world. ”

About MWCC:

The Madrid World Capital Association of Engineering, Construction and Architecture, is a project promoted by the Madrid City Council in 2016, it is an Association formed by public and private entities, companies, universities, architecture studios and engineering companies.

Our project was born with the purpose of improving the quality of life of citizens, enhancing the sectors in which Madrid had a competitive advantage and, at the same time, met two requirements: high qualification of human resources and intensive use of technology .
