MWCC joins the 20th anniversary of the UN Global Compact Spain
MWCC has joined the event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Global Compact. The event was attended by business leaders and leading figures in the ESG field in Spain. The collective achievements of the last two decades and the transformation of the Spanish business fabric towards a more responsible and sustainable model were highlighted.
Sustainability is not only a duty, it is the only way to guarantee the future. In addition, the event was also attended by key figures in the history of the UN Global Compact Spain, such as Juan de la Mota, former president of the initiative and CEO of Caixabank, an entity that held the presidency of the Spanish Network between 2012 and 2020, contributing to the progress of our initiative in Spain. Spanish companies were pioneers in joining the UN Global Compact movement and, over the past two decades, the Spanish Network has proven to be a solid model of how to build a business community committed to sustainability.
Since its inception in 2004, UN Global Compact Spain has been instrumental in integrating sustainability as a strategic focus in business. What started as an effort of 127 organisations has become a network of more than 1,800 entities actively working to align their strategies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN Global Compact's Ten Principles on human rights, labour standards, environment and anti-corruption. This number places the Spanish network among the top three UN Global Compact national networks by number of participants.
In the most demanding scenarios, companies participating in the UN Global Compact stand out. To mention just a few internationally eminent rankings, ECOVADIS, the leading independent global sustainability agency, certifies that UN Global Compact companies outperform their peers by 12 points. In addition, all Spanish companies that appear in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index 2023, the global index that evaluates the sustainable performance of large companies, are participants in the UN Global Compact.
Furthermore, 89% of the companies that make up FTSE4Good, a set of indices designed to measure ESG performance, are also participants in our initiative. These, among many other indices, reveal that commitment, participation in programmes and training and access to our services make companies leaders at the forefront of corporate sustainability.
MWCC is the first Spanish association in the sector to join the Spanish Global Compact Network, which is a clear commitment to social, environmental, financial and governance commitment.
